IS THERE NOTHING THE MAN WON'T SAY?

14 September 2006: He was asked whether Tony Blair was a friend, and Gordon Brown said: "Yes, and he will always be my friend." He'll never make a prime minister if he can't tell a better lie than that.

Their relationship really ought to be an object of admiring fascination. They don't like each other, they're entirely different in personality and attitude, they're riven with jealousies, betrayals, abuse and bitter fighting amongst their courtiers, and yet they've held it together for well over a decade. It's been the most creative partnership in political history. Each is necessary to the other. Neither could have done much by themselves. The job of prime minister is just too big for one person.

But friends? They're more like conjoined twins. They've come to the point where they're going for a surgical separation even though the operation will kill them both.
