FOUNDATION FACTS

JUST WHEN GRADUATE UNEMPLOYMENT RISES

According to the NatWest Student Money Matters survey, students starting university this year will pay an average of £33,152 to fund a three-year degree course, a 17 per cent increase on last year.  Half of this sum will remain as personal debt, to be paid off.

ISLAMO-FACTOIDS

In a Channel Four poll it was suggested that nearly a third of young British Muslims agree with the suggestion "the July bombings were justified because of British support for the war on terror"

One in three 18-24-year-old British Muslims said they'd prefer to live under Sharia law than under British law.

Eighty one per cent of British Muslims said they thought of themselves as a Muslim first and a citizen of their country  second. Only in Pakistan was the proportion higher (87 per cent). Interestingly, nearly half of British Muslims come from Pakistan.

HEREDITARY CLASSES STILL SIGNIFICANT IN BRITISH SOCIETY

A study of second homes by the Futures Foundation observes a trend towards "dynastic" property ownership as 83,000 properties have been specifically bought by parents for students as they study for their degree - a rise of a third since 2000.

THE KNOWN UNKNOWNS IN IMMIGRATION

Official estimates put the number settling in Slough in 2004 at just 300 but there were 9,000 new National Insurance registrations in the town that year - only 150 of which were for British nationals.

DEATHS IN IRAQ

6 August 2006: Violent killing of civilians in Iraq rose from 1,178 in January to 3,149 in June.

There were 858 bombings in July.

Colonel Larry Wilkerson, Colin Powell's former chief of staff at State said: "It already is a civil war."
